Finding the right pest control professional has a lot to do with which methods you feel comfortable using to eliminate your unwanted guests. Pest control experts rely on an arsenal of exclusion devices, traps, and poison bait. A reputable pest control company should be licensed by state agriculture departments. Most also carry liability insurance and belong to state pest control associations.

Pest Control Choices

There are basically three types of pest control: exclusion devices, traps, and poison bait. Knowing a little more about each type might help you make the best decision for your home and family.

  • Exclusion Devices - The cheapest and best way to deal with uninvited guests is to keep them from getting in at all. This technique involves plugging all possible entry holes. While effective, it is also a tedious process since many critters can wriggle through an opening just ¼ inch across.
  • Traps - Animals the size of squirrels or bigger are best captured in live traps. The trap should be made of tough galvanized steel mesh. You'll need to check the trap daily and release the live animal based on state and local regulations.
  • Poison Bait - There are a wide variety of poison baits available. Depending upon the pesky critter, baits can include blocks, glue, electric traps, snap traps, and much more. It is usually best for a pest control professional to determine which poison bait will work best for your situation, especially if you have young children and pets in your home.
